This month I continue with the second in a three part series covering the free planes that come with the Free-to-Play (F2P) RoF website or Steam version World War I simulator/game.

Second up is the Albatros D.Va German fighter, manufactured at the Albatros Werke and Osdeutsche Werke. The Albatros D.Va was a re-engineering of the older Albatros D.III. It had been determined that the D.III had a design flaw that showed up with the lower wings failing in a steep dive. To overcome this problem engineers tried moving the aileron control wires from the lower wing to the upper wing.

Test flights were carried out in the spring of 1917. In addition, the new plane’s changes included: increasing the tail fin surface, lowering the top wing closer to the fuselage, modification of the radiator location, making the fuselage more rounded and improving the Mercedes D.IIIa engine’s high altitude characteristics.

With these modifications the plane was designated: Albatros D.Va and placed into service in May 1917. After deployment, pilots placed little confidence in the improved lower wing structure and continued to refuse to place the plane in steep dives. Again, the engineers moved the aileron wires back to the lower wing and strengthened the wings attachment points.

The Albatros D.Va fought battles in both the Western Front and Palestinian Front. In total, 1650 D.Vs and D.Vas were built.

A few observational notes: The RoF Albatros D.Va is a turn fighter type plane with stable control characteristics along with good speed and climb rate.

Rise of Flight’s Three Free Airplanes

This month I am beginning a three parts series highlighting each of the airplanes included with the “Free-to-Play” copy of Rise of Flight. I will provide a short history of the airplane, specifications, familiarization and take-off/landing video procedures to help new cadets ease into the virtual cockpit.

The airplane this month is the Russian built: Nieuport 17.C1 RUS

This French designed plane is the model licensed to and manufactured by Dux in Moscow. The plane is very similar to its French variant but, contained some pine wood parts rather than spruce, linen was used in place of silk for portions of the wing coverings and Le Rhone engines were imported. The Nieuport 17.C1 RUS saw war service from August 1916 thru August 1917. By then more advanced airplanes such as the Albatros DIII, Sopwith Camel and Spad 7 were beginning to supplant it.

The Nieuport 17 advantages were that it had a narrower lower wing (called a: sesquiplane configuration) about one-half as wide as the top wing. Its purpose was to provide better maneuverability than a conventional biplane, a better downward visibility and a better climb rate with a more powerful engine. It also had better armament. (Technological advancements changed on a month-to-month basis so, take into account the time period.)

A few observational notes: This was a light-weight nimble “turn-fighter” type aircraft that performed best below 2000 m (6500 ft).
